Lesser-Known Yet Vital Equipment You’ll Need for Bug-out (or Bug-in)

For those of you coming up with a SHTF plan at the moment, it’s obvious you’ll need personal items, self defense equipment, IDs, cash, and food and water.

But what about everything else? On top of the standard tools and equipment you’ll need (which every other checklist has anyway) don’t overlook the following.

You will be glad you had them if the chips are ever down.

Emergency Communication Devices

Not just your phone, but a backup, like an emergency radio or walkie-talkies. Both of these are vital if cell service gets interrupted, and you can’t rely on that anyway, since it can be jammed, tapped, and surveiled.

An emergency radio can keep you updated on weather and local events, and other emergency communication devices like walkie-talkies can keep you in proximal communication with friends and loved ones if other communications lines fail.

Backup Power Generation

Not just a gas generator for your house – something more elemental that can’t easily be disabled. Think a hand-crank power station or a series of portable solar panels. These are more portable and easier to use, and can’t be disrupted by broken gas lines.

Also, they’re small yet powerful enough to provide a charge to your emergency communication devices, lights, and other electronics.

Extra Batteries

Portable solar panels won’t do you too much good if your emergency communication devices or lights take disposable batteries. Always have a small stash of these on hand as well.

OTC Medication

This is one of the things that’s likely most often-overlooked by those coming up with SHTF plans, but when you need it, you need it. Stock some basics like chapstick, vaseline, aspirin, ibuprofen, gauze, bandages, and other first aid essentials. They can save you in an emergency situation.

Water Treatment

Read that carefully – water treatment, not water. Look, you should also have an emergency water supply but that’s only good while it lasts. You should be prepared to collect rainwater (or water from other sources) and then treat it. That means you need either tablets, a water filtration system, or a still. One way or the other, your survival cannot be tethered to and contingent upon a finite water supply.

Food (But Not What You Think)

The same condition applies here. You should have emergency food supplies but you also need to be able to get food. This means you should have some basic fishing tackle, some snare wire for catching small animals, and some other means – a bow, a gun, a blowgun, or something like that.

Creature Comforts

Lastly, it’s important to recognize that bad things happen to your mind and body when they are not exercised. Make sure you have diversions, whether they be board games, cards, books, or some other project to work on. Keeping your mind and hands busy will help you stay healthy during prolonged periods that would otherwise be inactive.

Be Prepared

The tips contained herein are just a starting point. Don’t forget these survival essentials when building your plan – make sure none of them are missing from your collection, whether it’s intended for bug-out or bug-in.
