Hyprov Review: Is Hyprov: Improv Under Hypnosis Funnier Than Your Co-Worker’s Improv Troupe? – (Updated 2024)

Yes, without a doubt, “Hyprov: Improv Under Hypnosis” surpasses the comedic offerings of your average co-worker’s improv troupe. While your co-worker’s troupe may deliver amusing performances, “Hyprov” takes comedy to a whole new level with its unique premise and unparalleled execution.

Asad Mecci confidently surveys the eager 20 volunteers onstage at the Daryl Roth Theatre. It’s heartening to see so many individuals excited about the prospect of making their off-Broadway debut through hypnosis. “Wonderful eye contact, everyone on stage, wonderful eye contact,” he encourages warmly, his voice resonating with genuine enthusiasm. With a gentle posture and soothing tones, he begins the hypnotic induction, guiding them into a state of relaxation and focus. “Embrace the wonderful sensations of going deeper into relaxation,” he assures them. It’s a familiar phrase, but one filled with positivity and promise.

Before going on the show, I had read the Hyprov review that celebrated Mecci’s captivating stage presence, and I must say all of them were true. Mecci carefully selects four individuals from the audience, choosing those with a certain aura of receptiveness, evident in their shiny skin and vacant gazes—an indicator of susceptibility to hypnosis, as he explains. Importantly, he emphasizes that hypnosis cannot force anyone to act against their will, portraying it as a tool for self-discovery rather than a magical coercion seen in fictional tales.

This shift in perspective is particularly significant in a city still grappling with the aftermath of #MeToo. Mecci’s approach reframes hypnosis as a means of personal empowerment, contrasting with the manipulative portrayal often seen in popular culture. This rebranding is especially timely, given the city’s current fascination with self-help gurus who advocate for outlandish actions as a path to self-improvement.

In a culture where activities like Soul Cycle and motivational speakers like Tony Robbins reign supreme, Hyprov’s blend of improvisational comedy and hypnotic experimentation offers a refreshingly light-hearted alternative. It invites participants and audience members alike to step outside their comfort zones and explore the depths of their own subconscious minds in a safe and entertaining environment. Colin Mochrie, a comedy improv legend from the long-running show Whose Line Is It Anyway?, takes his talents to a whole new level in Hyprov. Mochrie acts as the hilarious guide, using audience suggestions to craft scenes based on different improv structures (think improv games!). This inventive format lets him create side-splitting scenarios, from singing a duet about an advertising project manager to a dramatic noir scene involving a strangled animator. Mochrie shines in every scene, seamlessly interacting with the four volunteers who have been hypnotized.

A captivating performance unfolded with a standout actor embodying a cowboy fixated on the classic Milton Bradley game Twister. His portrayal, infused with hilarious intensity, highlighted the power of actors who fully commit to their characters. The director’s pre-show call to “go for it!” emphasized the liberating power of full dedication in improv. It leaves the audience pondering the idea that the most captivating actors might be those who possess the ability to fully immerse themselves in their roles, creating a truly unforgettable performance.

Hyprov’s brilliant concept unlocks comedic magic by harnessing the power of spontaneity. Gone are the awkward pauses that can plague improv as hypnotized volunteers confidently embrace their first instincts in each scene. The audience is free to relax and enjoy the hilarious ride as these uninhibited performers explore their comedic impulses in a safe space free from judgment. Hyprov cleverly uses hypnosis as a playful explanation for these unexpected moments, creating a lighthearted atmosphere. Asad Mecci acts as a captivating guide, his engaging presence empowering volunteers to unlock their inner comedic genius. The result? Pure joy, as everyone embraces the opportunity to have fun and be silly.

The Hyprov show I attended showcased the incredible talents of the improvisers in a fun and supportive space.  Although the humor may not have been side-splittingly funny every moment, the show offered a refreshing reminder of the joy of spontaneous comedy! The show offered a familiar and comfortable atmosphere, reminiscent of watching an extended episode of Whose Line [a popular improv comedy show]. The games and subjects chosen leaned towards being family-friendly and inoffensive, making it a great choice for a casual night out. The focus on audience participation and the intriguing element of hypnosis added another layer of entertainment to the experience. Overall, Hyprov provided a lighthearted and enjoyable way to spend an evening.

The moment you enter the theater, director Stan Zimmerman sets the stage for an engaging experience. Trance-inducing pre-show music (courtesy of sound designer Walter Trarbach) creates a captivating atmosphere. Jo Winiarski’s set design cleverly blends the feel of a TED Talk with a stylish cocktail lounge, further piquing your interest. Jeff Croiter’s lighting design seamlessly complements each scene, subtly highlighting the power of theatrical lighting to draw you into the story. Music director John Hilsen provides live keyboard accompaniment, including some captivating pieces composed by Rufus Wainwright. The live element adds an energy that perfectly complements the set design and lighting.

Hyprov promises an unforgettable evening of laughter and wonder. Witness the hilarious combination of improvisation and hypnosis in this unique theatrical experience. Prepare to be amazed by the on-stage antics inspired by audience suggestions, all under the captivating influence of hypnosis.
