For students studying dentistry, tooth carving is one of the most difficult tasks in practice school. Dental anatomy is all about observation as well as analysis of natural teeth. It also includes wax models to precisely make the morphology of teeth. Preserving the tooth’s natural anatomy is more important than getting it extracted. Therefore, restorative dental procedures include a variety of instruments, including dental surgical instruments like carvers.

Let us talk about the importance of tooth carving and its relevance to clinical practice.

Step 1: Read & understand tooth anatomy:

Before your guide starts to demonstrate, read, and understand the tooth anatomy. Make notes of each surface of the tooth, including facial, lingual, mesial, etc. Do not rely on textbook knowledge, and be sure to take notes during the demonstration.

Step 2: Instruments for Carving

Having the right knowledge and understanding of the surgical instruments is crucial before purchasing them many reputable brand sells German forged stainless steel dental carvers and various other ergonomically designed instruments.

Carver dental instruments are used with dental filling procedures. The carvers carve out the contour and form waxes and models. They come in different sizes and tip blades that help carve teeth located in different mouth areas.

Step 3: Keep an ideally carved tooth sample in front of you

Ask the demonstrator to do a tooth carving for you. You can also get an extracted tooth and carve it yourself.

Step 4: Begin the process of carving:

During carving, one must have a detailed knowledge of the tooth anatomy. Then, start carving different surfaces, starting with facial, lingual, mesial and distal. Finally, carve the occlusal at the end and avoid applying excess pressure.

Step 5: Do not get distracted:

Carving is a necessary procedure that needs a ton of practice. Always make sure there are no distractions around you. Concentrate, observe and learn.

Step 6: Strengthen your imagination:

Always keep a dental carver and wax block with you. Carve whatever comes into your mind, even if you do not have the template in front of you. The more you carve with imagination, the better you get. Soon enough, you will learn to carve like a professional.

Grasping Techniques for dental carvers:

Different techniques for dental carvers are as follows:

Modified pen grasping technique:

In this technique, the carver is held between the thumb and forefinger. When using it, the pad of the thumb, finger, and forefinger are constantly in contact with the carver. The ring finger rests on the nearby tooth. The tip of the middle finger is placed on the top of the instrument for a better grip. Since the technique requires minimum force, excess pressure is not needed.

Pen Grasp:

The dental carver is grasped with the thumb and the index finger. In this technique, the base of the index finger and tip of the middle finger reciprocate the carver to move smoothly. This technique allows more flexibility to the carver.

Inverted Pen Grasp:

This technique is similar to the pen grasping technique. However, the technique is not suitable for all dental carvers. Therefore, knowing the instrument’s tip size and handle length is important before using the grasping method.

Types of carvers available in the market:

Carver CV2/4:

  • Made from German forged stainless steel
  • It has a precise tip
  • Iso 9001 certified

Carver E2/3:

  • Made out of German forged stainless steel
  • It removes excess material from the teeth
  • The tip is used in combination with the posterior teeth

Clappison Carver 4:

  • Made from high-end stainless steel
  • Removes tartar or plaque from the teeth

Clappison Carver 2:

  • The carver has a slightly thicker tip, allowing carving of the side teeth
  • The instrument is reusable
  • It is rust-proof
  • It is made from Stainless steel

Dental carvers are tips:

Since carvers tend to get dull over time, instruments must go through regular inspection and sterilization. Hence, it is important to sharpen them with rubber wheels.
