John Ritenour has loved sports even longer than he worked in the insurance industry, which is impressive considering he spent about 40 years in the business. John Ritenour served as the CEO of the Insurance Office of America (IOA), the company he founded with his wife, for exactly 30 years. However, he did not come up with the idea of launching a separate sports division until about midway through his tenure.

John Ritenour Launched the IOA Sports Division Slowly

As a lifelong sports fan, John Ritenoursaw an opportunity to serve a niche market that few others saw. He came up with the idea of creating a separate division for sports clients after a chance conversation with a representative from the Orlando Magic of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Despite his enthusiasm for serving a new client base, Ritenour took his time developing relationships with sports teams and business owners before he created a new product line for their unique needs.

After taking on the Orlando Magic as its first sports division client, IOA connected with several other colleges, minor league, and major league teams to provide them with top-notch insurance coverage. Examples of other teams that currently receive insurance coverage from IOA include:

  • Memphis Grizzlies
  • Jacksonville Jaguars
  • Charlotte Hornets
  • Tampa Bay Lightning
  • Las Vegas Raiders
  • Washington Wizards

IOA has had the privilege of providing customized insurance coverage to hockey, baseball, basketball, golf, swimming, and soccer teams for the past several years.

The IOA Sports Partnership Will Only Get Bigger

Before John Ritenour retired in 2018 and his son, Heath Ritenour, became the company’s new CEO, the two formulated a plan to grow the sports division. Specifically, the father-son duo planned to expand IOA’s services into other sports with governing bodies like the USA Swimming Team.

Even though he has been enjoying retirement for three years, John Ritenour still consults with his son about the goals they developed for the company together. Both Ritenours would love to see the IOA sports division expand beyond the current big four of baseball, football, basketball, and professional racing. Despite his enthusiasm for serving a new client base, Ritenour took his time developing relationships with sports teams and business owners before he created a new product line for their unique needs.

Sports is a multi-billion dollar business, especially in the United States. With the pandemic causing many people to realize just how much they loved and missed sports, teams are doing their best to serve and engage their fans. At the same time, they understand their own risks cannot remain uncovered. Working with IOA gives sports executives the freedom to spend time on what they do best, while sports insurance professionals work hard to mitigate risks.
